Australia's Bundaberg, Coral Coast and Country is a dynamic destination awaiting your discovery and the gateway to one of the wonders of the world — the Southern Great Barrier Reef. It is also where you'll be able to go Whale Watching from July - October.
Bundaberg joins the Burnett River as it courses from idyllic country hideaways to pristine beaches and the beginning of the spectacular Southern Great Barrier Reef.
The city of Bundaberg is a bustling provincial capital, boasting beautiful heritage buildings proudly mixed with modern architecture and famous local icons like the Bundaberg Rum Distillery.
Cruise the currents of this dynamic river city or use it as your base to explore over 92kms of unspoilt coastline. Discover clean stinger-free beaches, and cosmopolitan cafes, 4WD in one of eight coastal National Parks or just sit back, relax and enjoy a spot of fishing - all without the crowds.
Whatever you do, don't miss the opportunity to swim, snorkel, dive or simply bask in the unadorned beauty of this unique natural icon.
A sea of green sugarcane beckons you to explore the back roads and peaceful scenery of the beautiful countryside. Head west and enjoy the magnificent rural hinterland with spectacular mountains, rugged peaks, historic country towns and wide-open spaces. Take the time to slow down, relax, and discover an abundance of holiday treasures.
Bargara, blessed with a mild, sub-tropical climate is a 13 kilometre drive through lush sugarcane fields from Bundaberg. It is a popular seaside area which harbours a peaceful and relaxed community ideal for enjoyable family holidays away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Bargara boasts two open surf beaches and two still water swimming areas. The Bargara Streetscape project embraces the coastline with an attractive public area of walkways, decks, picnic areas and playgrounds. Cafe's and eateries create an alfresco atmosphere.
Fishing enthusiasts are well catered for at Bargara with an artificial offshore reef guaranteeing good fishing all year round. The Woongarra Marine Park preserves the coastline and offers fishing and snorkelling right on the shore.
A first class golf course is located just behind the beach and a bowling green offers outdoor entertainment for people of all ages.
Nearby, the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery provides a fascinating look at the endangered sea turtles during the nesting and hatching season. Mon Repos is the most accessible turtle nesting ground on the Australian mainland and one of the largest on the entire Pacific rim. The giant reptiles come ashore in Mon Repos Environmental Park to lay their eggs from November to February. Visitors can watch the breeding ritual in groups led by wildlife rangers.
Another local spot of interest is The Basin, a sheltered swimming area which has been built out of local volcanic rock, located at the very southern end of the town's main Esplanade.
Just off the main road between Bargara and Bundaberg is an interesting volcanic outcrop, a remnant of a volcanic cylinder cone, which Matthew Flinders named 'Sloping Hummock'. Over the years it has become known simply as 'The Hummock'. It offers a good view of the surrounding countryside. The ocean can be seen to the east and to the west the sugar cane fields stretch to the city of Bundaberg.
