Paradise in the sun

This was our third stay at the Rarotongan, but first at the Sanctuary. Loved it. The close sea view was amazing, the room spacious. Staff wonderful and friendly even though shortstaffed at time. This resort has the best swimming and snorkling on the island, handy to everywhere.

Rainy Holiday in Rorotonga

Great resort with personalities to match. It was a special occasion for one of our family members and the staff went far and beyond to make her and her partners stay very welcoming and made every effort to make sure the special occasion went to, and exceeded, the plan. The plan was directed by our family in New Zealand. Highly recommended. The remainder of the family members would stay here when they travel to Rarotonga

Definately not 4.5 star resort

Food was expensive. The room itself and the resort need a spruce up, very dated. Daily service of our room consisted of changing the towels and making of the bed. NO CLEANING AT ALL. Most of the staff were wonderful.

Our stay at the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary was very relaxing and the view from our room was lovely. The room was nice and clean and well maintained. The pool area was quiet with plenty of lounge seating as well as areas for eating.

What this member liked most:

The easy access to snorkelling from the resort beach.

Relaxing getaway

Excellent views of the lagoon. Awesome snorkelling. Bed and room comfortable. Daily servicing poor. Eat breakfast at the Rarotonga resort side as better food selection. Don't get the buffet dinner. The A la carte at the Sanctuary restaurant good. Went to go to the orientation tour but no one showed up.

Santuary Rarotonga

Nice room with a lovely outlook. Friendly staff who were always helpful despite being busy. We enjoyed the use of the water sport equipment. The breakfast was unusual. Would have apprciated more tropical fruit, eggs and toast.

Great location but high priced for its standard

We stayed at The Sanctuary based on its 4.5 star rating and beachfront location. Yes, the location right on the beach was 5 star...the resort itself would be about 3 star based on our past experiences of resort properties. THE POSITIVES: 1. The position is right on the beach and the suites either open on to the sand or are one level above. It's personal preference as to which is best...we chose upstairs as the wonderful view overlooking the beach and lagoon was better and the ceilings were higher than the downstairs rooms 2. The plentiful included supply of kyacks, paddle boards, snorkeling gear, sun loungers etc 3.The staff. They were friendly, happy and helpful 4. The restaurant dinner food at Captain Andy's restaurant. It was of very good quality, and priced OK.( $20-$33 for mains:.about the same as it would be in a New Zealand or Australian hotel.) Hint: Book and get there at 6pm or after 7.30pm to minimize delays in getting your dinner. Also the very useful free map of Rarotonga ( available in racks in the foyers of both hotels) has printed vouchers one of which is for a free glass of wine at this restaurant. These saved us $20 each time we dined there. 4. Very good super king beds THE NEGATIVES 1. We had to email 4 times before we got a reply to our emails requesting an upstairs room in the 700 block. Not good enough for a 4.5 star place 2.. Rooms are OK, but don't get much natural light. The property was built at least 30 years ago and there seems to have been little modernization since, so the "suites" are really adequate studios of about a 3.5 star standard. Room rate was over $320/night which is much to high for this standard. It was strange that they were normally serviced at about 6pm each day. 3.Included Breakfast was strange. It was a degustation type and the dishes tasted very different, sometimes unpleasant and sometimes great.. An option was to have breakfast at The Rarotongan next door and that was abysmal. The worst

Disappointed in Raro

Perhaps the cool, windy weather did not help, but the resort seemed 'tired' and although the staff were cheerful and helpful, waiting time at the restaurant was definitely 'island time' despite not being full. Degustation breakfast was tasty, but limited amounts of fresh fruit and coconut in everything , with a complete lack of teaspoons! Alternative dining next door (Rarotongan) was " Breakfast continental buffet" and pretty basic. Dinner was good, if slow. I would not think of this as 4 or 41/2 star resort.
